On September 17, 2024, as part of European Mobility Week (EMW), a workshop titled “The Street of My Dreams” was held in the Bakırköy district of Istanbul. Hosted by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the event aimed to develop ideas and solutions to make Pelinli and Alpay İzer Streets more people-oriented, safe, and accessible. The workshop brought together municipal officials, civil society organizations, local government representatives, and neighborhood residents to discuss projects that could enhance the livability of the streets.
In the opening speech of the event, Melda Horoz, Head of the Transportation Planning Department at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, emphasized the importance of pedestrian-prioritized urban planning. She stated, “Our priority is people, our priority is pedestrians. Public spaces should be open, safe, and accessible to everyone.” Horoz highlighted that human-centered approaches are essential for creating a more livable urban environment in large cities like Istanbul.
The Concept of Healthy Streets
Following the opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Sertaç Erten gave a presentation on the concept of healthy streets. Erten pointed out that streets are not just transportation corridors but also shared public spaces, saying, “We aim for streets that are more human-centered, inclusive, comfortable, and safe.” His presentation demonstrated how healthy streets can strengthen social cohesion and environmental sustainability.
Case Studies and Observations
In the first part of the workshop, participants examined successful examples of healthy streets from around the world. Before-and-after comparisons of street redesigns were analyzed, and alternative solutions for Pelinli Street were discussed. These examples provided inspiration for participants and fostered an exchange of ideas on how to create healthier and more livable streets in Istanbul.
Didem Koryürek, the neighborhood head of Kartaltepe, emphasized the importance of public participation in these processes, stating, “Projects cannot be developed without consulting those who live on the streets. We will create a more livable city through inclusive participation.” She highlighted the necessity of involving neighborhood residents and local businesses in such initiatives.
Street Walk and Solution Proposals
In the second part of the workshop, participants conducted a walk along Pelinli and Alpay İzer Streets to observe existing issues on-site. They focused on factors that hinder pedestrian movement, sidewalk accessibility, and parking arrangements. Additionally, the importance of shaded areas as a key element of healthy streets was emphasized. Observations also noted the interest of local shopkeepers in the event and the necessity of involving them in the process.
After the walk, participants presented their proposed solutions for making the streets more accessible and safer. Three alternative solutions were discussed to enhance the livability of Pelinli Street. Throughout the day, ideas were exchanged on how to improve street accessibility for all, and suggestions for street redesigns were evaluated.
The “Street of My Dreams” workshop held in Bakırköy was a significant step toward pedestrian-prioritized urban planning and the improvement of public spaces. As part of European Mobility Week, this event raised awareness by bringing together different segments of society to make urban streets more livable, safe, and accessible. The collaborative solutions developed by participants will serve as inspiration for future healthy street projects across Istanbul.
