On 23 October 2024, a Public Information Meeting on Low Emission Zones was held in Istanbul within the framework of the Istanbul Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SKUP) Phase II – Implementation Plan Project. The meeting aimed to introduce Istanbul’s goals of improving air quality, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

The event discussed the potential contributions of Low Emission Zones to the city’s overall quality of life by alleviating traffic-related congestion. It was emphasized that encouraging eco-friendly mobility alternatives such as walking, cycling, and public transport within these zones would generate both individual and collective benefits.

In the afternoon session, workshops were held where participants shared their views and suggestions on Low Emission Zones. These inputs will be taken into consideration in defining the boundaries and implementation methods of the zones.

The event was attended by officials from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, representatives of district municipalities, academics, and civil society organizations.

Participants gained insights into how these practices, to be implemented under Istanbul’s sustainable urban goals, would affect both individual daily life and broader social well-being. The workshops also provided a platform for different stakeholders to present solution-oriented proposals and to foster a shared approach towards a more livable vision for Istanbul.
