Within the scope of the Istanbul Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) Stage II – Implementation Plan Project, a Python training was organized in Istanbul on 11 March 2026 focusing on the use of Python in transport planning and transport data analysis.

The training brought together employees of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department and introduced the potential of Python programming in supporting data analysis and modelling processes in transport planning studies. Participants were introduced to the basic concepts of Python programming and practical examples were presented using transport-related datasets.

The training covered topics such as setting up and using development environments, basic programming concepts, data structures, and the use of data analysis libraries. In addition, practical exercises were conducted using smart card transaction data commonly used in public transport systems. Through these exercises, participants explored how indicators such as hourly passenger demand, route-based demand levels, and stop-based passenger density can be analysed using Python.

During the applied sessions, particular emphasis was placed on analysing passenger demand patterns through smart card datasets and interpreting these results for transport planning processes. Examples related to data visualisation techniques and the use of AI-supported tools in Python coding workflows were also shared with participants.

The training aimed to strengthen data-driven approaches in transport planning and enhance analytical capacity in mobility planning processes.
