On Tuesday, 7 January 2025, the Maritime Transport Workshop was organized within the framework of the Istanbul Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SKUP) Phase II – Implementation Plan Project. The event aimed to increase the share of maritime transport within Istanbul’s public transport system and to develop a more accessible and integrated sea transport network, bringing together key stakeholders.
The workshop opened with remarks by Melda Horoz, Head of Transport Planning Department at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. This was followed by a comprehensive presentation by Prof. Stratos Papadimitriou on the Maritime Transport Pilot Project carried out under SKUP Phase II. The presentation provided detailed insights into the project’s objectives, implementation methods, and expected outcomes.
During the workshop sessions, topics such as improving the accessibility of ferry piers, ensuring integration with other modes of transport, and strategic planning for the future of maritime transport were discussed. With the participation of district municipalities, civil society organizations, professional chambers, and citizens, the current and potential impacts of the projects were evaluated. Participants also shared their views on transforming Istanbul’s transport system into a more environmentally friendly and sustainable structure.
