On 24 December 2024, the Bus Priority Lanes Workshop was organized within the framework of the Istanbul Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SKUP) Phase II – Implementation Plan Project. Aiming to increase the efficiency of buses in Istanbul’s public transport system, the event provided an important platform to discuss solutions focused on efficiency and sustainability in urban mobility.
The workshop began with opening remarks by Barış Yıldırım, Head of the IMM Department of Transportation. This was followed by a presentation from Haluk Camcıgil, Project Expert, who addressed the impacts of bus priority lanes on travel time and safety. His presentation offered a detailed overview of both the benefits and potential challenges of implementing such lanes.
As part of the program, successful case studies from other cities were examined, and appropriate design criteria for Istanbul were evaluated. In the workshop sessions, participants exchanged ideas on the design of bus lanes and related policy choices. Various scenarios regarding which types of vehicles should be permitted to use the lanes were also discussed.
Participants contributed technically and socially viable solutions, sharing their perspectives on the most efficient design options suitable for Istanbul’s traffic conditions.
