As part of European Mobility Week, the “Freedom is Movement” Ferry: Conversations on Transportation Between Two Shores event was held on September 20, 2024, on the Kadıköy-Beşiktaş ferry route. The event aimed to highlight the advantages of maritime transportation as an environmentally friendly alternative while reimagining ferries as shared public spaces within Istanbul’s social fabric. Taking place aboard one of the city’s iconic ferries, the event allowed participants to enjoy live music while reflecting on sustainable transportation and social interaction.

The journey began with a live music performance by Vokal Akademi as the ferry departed from Kadıköy pier. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with music, created a unique and immersive experience for passengers. Following the performance, a discussion titled “City and the Sea: Traces of Coexistence” featured Melda Horoz, Head of the Transportation Planning Department at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and renowned actor Mert Fırat. They explored the historical and social importance of Istanbul’s coastal areas, emphasizing their role as gathering spaces throughout history. Melda Horoz highlighted the significance of maritime transportation in reducing traffic congestion and fighting air pollution, while Mert Fırat reflected on the cultural identity of ferries, describing them as more than just a means of transport but an integral part of Istanbul’s character.

The second session introduced a creative and interactive element: the “Folding Our Dreams on the Ferry” origami workshop. Before the activity, passengers were invited to write personal memories related to ferry journeys, uncovering the emotional bond between Istanbulites and the city’s maritime heritage. These shared memories highlighted how ferries have shaped daily life and personal experiences in the city. Participants then created origami boats, blending creativity with nostalgia and reinforcing the idea that ferries serve as both transportation and a medium of emotional connection.

The final session featured Özgür Soy, Head of the Transportation Group at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and TV presenter Osmantan Erkır, discussing “Eco-Friendly Transportation: The Maritime Journey.” The conversation centered on the role of maritime transport in sustainable urban development, addressing its environmental benefits and its potential to serve as an alternative to Istanbul’s congested road networks. Özgür Soy emphasized the energy efficiency of sea transport, while Osmantan Erkır reflected on the cultural and social significance of ferries as spaces where people connect and interact.

Throughout the event, it was emphasized that ferries are more than just a means of transportation; they are social and cultural connectors that can play a vital role in shaping a more sustainable and inclusive city. Discussions underscored the critical role of maritime transport in reducing emissions and alleviating traffic congestion, positioning it as an essential solution for Istanbul’s future. By transforming a routine ferry journey into an engaging and thought-provoking experience, the event not only raised awareness about sustainable mobility options but also offered passengers a cultural and artistic journey. The initiative reinforced the idea that embracing ferries as part of daily life is not only a practical choice but also a step toward preserving the environment and enriching Istanbul’s urban experience.
