On 4 July 2025, a workshop organized under SKUP Phase II addressed data management in sustainable urban mobility. Experts discussed the role of data in shaping the future of mobility, drawing on Istanbul’s practices and international experiences.

Within the scope of the Istanbul Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SKUP) Phase II, the “Workshop on the Use of Data Management Practices in Sustainable Mobility” brought together local and international experts on 4 July 2025. The event focused on data-driven approaches in Istanbul’s mobility planning, aiming to exchange sectoral experiences and develop new strategies.

The workshop opened with remarks by Melda Horoz, Head of the Transport Planning Department at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Highlighting the power of data in transforming Istanbul’s mobility system along the axis of sustainability, Horoz underlined the importance of data-driven decision-making processes.

The event featured four dedicated sessions addressing various aspects of data management and mobility planning. Hassan Hussin from Rupprecht spoke in the first and third sessions, sharing good practices in transport data management from Europe and outlining data-based strategic planning processes. Prof. Dr. Haluk Gerçek, Team Leader of the Istanbul SKUP Technical Advisory Team, presented experiences from data collection processes conducted in Istanbul and assessed their impact on mobility planning. Senior Expert Ersoy Pehlivan and Expert Burcu Soygüzeloğlu, in the closing session, introduced the data governance approach developed within Istanbul SKUP, explaining how inter-institutional data sharing and coordination form a basis for future mobility policies.

Throughout the workshop, participants had the opportunity to discuss the contributions of data management practices to sustainable urban mobility planning and to explore areas for collaboration. The event once again highlighted the importance of transparent, accessible, and integrated data management processes in Istanbul’s mobility planning, while providing a platform for the next steps towards a data-driven mobility vision.
